Satellite images have captured a usually invisible phenomenon known as atmospheric gravity waves pulsing through clouds off Western Australia’s north-west.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior meteorologist Adam Morgan said atmospheric gravity waves were basically ripples in the sky.

“When you think of waves in the ocean, they’re a type of gravity wave,” he said.

“When you throw a rock in a pond and you see the ripples flowing out, they’re gravity waves as well.

“Essentially gravity waves are disturbances in any sort of fluid, so we see them often in water, but the atmosphere is a fluid as well — so any sort of disturbances in there can generate waves.”

Some people don’t know the difference between climate and weather.
And have never been in a manufacturing plant so don’t know that outliers occur and you don’t tweak the production line every time an outlier occurs.

I have found this to be very much the case. Every person I help work out their basic purpose in life finds it to be some form of helping others.

Big, destructive hurricanes are hitting the U.S. three times more frequently than they did a century ago, according to a new study. Experts generally measure a hurricane’s destruction by adding up how much damage it did to people and cities. That can overlook storms that are powerful, but that hit only sparsely populated areas. A Danish research team came up with a new measurement that looked at just how big and strong the hurricane was, not how much money it cost. They call it Area of Total Destruction.

I recently found my wife’s logo on the back of an interstate car.

On its surface, the plan was simple: gene-hack mosquitoes so their offspring immediately die, mix them with disease-spreading bugs in the wild, and watch the population drop off. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite pan out.

I was asked to answer a survey for the Australian Conservation Foundation. One question was what do I hope for the future. This was my answer:
I hope we pass on a saner, ethical government uninfluenced by corporate interests detrimental to people and the environment and a corporate culture where profit is not the sole determinant of direction and motive for action, where the good of the individual members of society, the flora, fauna, land, water and sea are as large an influence on decision making as corporate profits.

As went Rome, so goes America.

The ability to name all of the elements on the periodic table from actinium to zinc is an impressive feat. Actually being able to explain how each element functions in the real world is a little more challenging. “The Periodic Table of Elements, in Pictures and Words” was created by Boeing software engineer Keith Enevoldsen. He frames the design as a tool for teaching students in elementary through high school, but it can also be used by adults looking to polish their rusty knowledge from chemistry class. The uses of some elements are widely known: Sodium, for instance, is paired with a picture of a salt shaker, while neon is illustrated with an illuminated advertising sign. Others, though, aren’t so obvious: Did you know that strontium is used in fireworks, or that boron can be found in sports equipment? What about scandium in bicycles, or tantalum in cell phones? There’s a helpful illustration accompanying each element found in nature.

Criminal negligence on the part of both state and feral, sorry, federal governments.

When the state has been in drought fo so long, to cut fire funding by tens of millions of dollare (while in the same budget spending $2b on a stadium) leading to such widespread destruction of property and tragic loss of life is at best gross mismanagement and at worst criminal negligence resulting in death. The charge should be manslaughter by incompetence or malfeasance.

We deserve better governance than this!
