Mobile Friendly Web Sites

Good mobile user experience requires a different design than what’s needed to satisfy desktop users. Two designs, two sites, and cross-linking to make it all work. www.useit.com/alertbox/mobile-vs-full-sites.html

Interesting and Useful Data on Sleep

Just one fact, “...shift work can decrease your lifespan by about seven years on average!” http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/04/09/dr-rubin-naiman-on-how-much-sleep-do-you-need.aspx

AntiDepressant Side Effects

Pop A Pill Or Take A Walk?

Hmmm... ...take a walk should be researched as an alternative. It has been used as a cure by Africans for generations.

Early exposure to BPA has the same bad effects as early mercury exposure.

When testing the chemical found in many common plastics, researcher Daniel Weber noticed it had the same effects as mercury. Specifically, early exposure to the stuff caused problems both right after birth and later in life. “What was amazing is that exposure only happened at the embryonic stage,” says Weber, “but somehow the wiring in the brain had been permanently altered by it.”

Oh, by the way, BPA is found in a lot of common things like, baby formula and canned soup. Scary, eh? [University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee] http://www5.uwm.edu/news/2012/04/03/early-life-exposure-to-bpa-affects-adult-learning/

Conversational Rebuttal to Attacks on CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicines)

The next time someone denigrates your use of vitamins, herbs, nutrition or other Complementary and Alternative Medicines as “unscientific”, “unsubstantiated” or “hocus pocus”, smile pleasantly and ask them, “Haven’t you hear the latest news? Scientifc research is more money than health motivated and the majority of it is corrupt and unethical.”

“During a decade as head of global cancer research at Amgen, C. Glenn Begley identified 53 ’landmark’ publications — papers in top journals, from reputable labs — for his team to reproduce. Begley sought to double-check the findings before trying to build on them for drug development. Result: 47 of the 53 could not be replicated. He described his findings in a commentary piece published on Wednesday in the journal Nature... ...they and others fear the phenomenon is the product of a skewed system of incentives that has academics cutting corners to further their careers.”

Doctor creates his own Tricorder

If Star Trek has taught us anything, it’s the importance of gathering as much information about the alien planet you’ve just been beamed onto as quickly as possible. To that end, the Science Officer on the away team would perform a quick scan of the surroundings with a handheld, multifunctional sensing device called a Tricorder. Fortunately, we now live in an age where the science fiction of yesteryear is increasingly becoming the science fact of today, and the once futuristic Tricorder is no exception. For his Tricorder Project, Canada’s Dr Peter Jansen has designed and built some pocket-friendly devices housing a number of sensors which reveal the secrets of the unseen world around us. http://www.gizmag.com/jansen-tricorder-project/22019/

Until next time,
dream big dreams,
read widely,
think well of your fellow man,
eat food that’s good for you
and do the important things
that make a difference -
they are rarely the urgent ones!
